Your First Import from China: the 10 Mistakes That Cost Real Money

The ten first-import mistakes that actually cost money — deposits, specs, incoterms, compliance — and the cheap habit that prevents each.

Bolang Solutions is a trading company. We chose the model on purpose: it lets us buy across many factories instead of selling you one production line, inspect goods we don't manufacture, and put our own name on every export document as seller of record. The industry's trading-company horror stories are concealment stories — so we run the opposite playbook: registered scope public, address public, and a standing invitation to verify us on gsxt.gov.cn the same way we verify suppliers.

On shipments we trade, the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading carry Bolang as seller of record. One counterparty, legally on the hook, answering in English.

Verify us the way we verify suppliers — our registered name, address and Unified Social Credit Code are published on this site; look us up on gsxt.gov.cn.

First imports fail in patterns, not surprises. These are the ten we see, each with the habit that prevents it — most of them cost minutes to avoid and thousands to repeat.

The ten

1 · Paying before verifying — the registry check costs almost nothing; run it before any deposit. 2 · The unwritten spec — if it isn't on the sheet, it wasn't ordered; write everything, including packaging. 3 · Comparing quotes on different bases — one spec, one incoterm, one currency, or the numbers lie (full method in the quotes guide). 4 · Skipping the sample — or approving it by photo; hold the physical golden sample. 5 · Misreading the incoterm — EXW means the goods are yours at the factory door, problems included. 6 · Ignoring compliance until the port — the destination market's rules belong in the spec, not the apology. 7 · Duty on the wrong invoice — duty follows the invoice shown; know whose invoice that is. 8 · No pre-shipment check — the last cheap moment to find a problem is before loading. 9 · Wood packaging forgotten — the ISPM-15 stamp, or the pallet strands the cargo. 10 · Treating the first order as the relationship — it is the audition; document how they behave, not just what they ship.

The pattern behind the ten: every one is a sequence error — the right action done too late. The whole game of importing well is doing cheap things early instead of expensive things late.

Common questions

What's the single most important one?

Verification before payment — it deletes the worst outcomes for the least money.

Is a small first order safer?

Smaller stakes, same mistakes — the habits above cost the same at any size, which is why learning them on a small order is the honest strategy.

Where do I start?

The full step-by-step lives in the China Sourcing Guide — this page is the mistakes; that one is the method.
