FCL or LCL From China — Where the Break-Even Actually Sits

LCL looks cheaper per cubic metre right up until the destination invoice arrives.

Bolang Solutions is a trading company. We chose the model on purpose: it lets us buy across many factories instead of selling you one production line, inspect goods we don't manufacture, and put our own name on every export document as seller of record. The industry's trading-company horror stories are concealment stories — so we run the opposite playbook: registered scope public, address public, and a standing invitation to verify us on gsxt.gov.cn the same way we verify suppliers.

On shipments we trade, the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading carry Bolang as seller of record. One counterparty, legally on the hook, answering in English.

Verify us the way we verify suppliers — our registered name, address and Unified Social Credit Code are published on this site; look us up on gsxt.gov.cn.

The break-even between a shared container and a full one is usually discussed in cubic metres, which is the wrong unit. The ocean freight is the part people compare and the part that differs least. What actually decides it is the charges at the far end, and several of them do not scale with your volume at all.

Where LCL costs stop being proportional

LCL cargo has to be consolidated into a container with other shipments and taken apart again at the other end. That work happens at a container freight station, and it generates a set of destination charges — handling, deconsolidation, documentation, sometimes storage — that are frequently billed per shipment or with a minimum, not per cubic metre.

Therefore, the smaller your shipment, the more of these you pay per unit of goods. A quote comparison that puts an LCL sea-freight rate against an FCL sea-freight rate and stops there will favour LCL at volumes where the total cost does not.

The costs that are not on either quote

Handling. LCL cargo is loaded, unloaded, moved and re-stacked alongside other people’s goods. More handling is more damage, and pallet-level protection that would be unnecessary in a sole-use container becomes worth paying for.

Other people’s problems. A shared container moves at the speed of its slowest constituent. A fumigation issue, a documentation hold or a customs examination triggered by another consignment in the same box delays yours, and you have no relationship with the party that caused it.

Time. Consolidation waits for the container to fill; deconsolidation queues at the far end. Both are real and neither appears on a freight rate.

How to compare them honestly

Ask both quotes for the full destination charge schedule, not the freight rate. Then total each on the volume you are actually shipping, including the per-shipment minimums. The crossover point that falls out of that arithmetic is yours — it depends on your port, your goods and your forwarder, which is exactly why a general figure quoted on the internet is not worth much.

The honest exception: below a genuinely small volume, LCL is simply correct and the analysis above is over-thinking a small shipment. The mistake this page exists to prevent is not choosing LCL — it is choosing it on a comparison that only looked at one line.

Common questions

Is air freight ever the sensible comparison?

For high-value, low-volume goods, or when a stockout costs more than the freight, yes. Comparing it fairly means using landed cost per unit sold rather than cost per kilogram.

Can I fill a container with several suppliers’ goods?

Yes — that is consolidation, and it is one of the more reliable ways to reach FCL economics without a single large order. It requires someone in China to receive, check and load the goods, which is work rather than a booking.

Does Bolang consolidate?

Yes, where we are handling the orders. We will also tell you when your volume genuinely does not justify it and LCL is the right answer — that conversation is cheaper for both of us than a badly filled container.
